At Poon Hill, which is less than an hour’s ascent from Ghorepani, the early risers will be welcomed by a majestic vista of the sunrise over the Annapurna South (7219m) and Dhulagiri range.
Up, up, and then one more up, and there you reach Poon Hill (this is where you get smitten by the majestic vista of the sunrise over the mountains), then down, up, down, up and one more down and, voila, the beautiful Ghandruk village of the Gurung people for sore eyes to see and sore legs to rest on… well that’s how the Poon Hill Ghandruk trekking trail follows.
It may sound a difficult trek what with all those ups and downs in the route but in comparison to others, this trekking trail is quite short and easy. In fact, it’s proclaimed as the shortest among most other Annapurna area trekking routes, taking only about 5 days of actual hike, 2 arrive-depart flight days and another 2 rest-cum-shopping-sightseeing days as per our itinerary.
Witness the exquisite red blanket of rhododendron flowers as you trek through the densely forested path of Ghorepani (2850m). For your information, this pretty little rhododendron species is Nepal’s national flower.
At Poon Hill, which is less than an hour’s ascent from Ghorepani, the early risers will be welcomed by amajestic vista of the sunrise over the Annapurna South (7219m) and Dhulagiri range. During the trek, you will also catch the grandeur of Mt. Macchapucchare (translates to “fishtail” in simple English) and other mountains like Hiunchuli (6441m) and Nilgiri.
Besides natural landscapes, the trail will also have you stumble upon small villages hanging over the sides of the hills. Your final destination will be Ghandruk, the beautiful ethnic village of Gurung people where you will get the chance to acquaint with an aspect of Nepali culture and taste the delicious native cuisine (of course, international menu too is available at request).
What’s more, you don’t even need to dread altitude sickness since 3210 meters at Poon Hill is the highest altitude that this particular trek will allow.
Day 1: Drive To Pokhara From Kathmandu! (O/N)
From Kathmandu, your guide will take you to Pokhara, which is just about 6-7 hours drive (or you can take a 25 minutes flight there). If time allows, you may be able to roam through the paradise like city of Pokhara. You could dare yourself for paragliding from Sarangkot or just have a peaceful boating on the pristine Phewa Tal, upon the surface of which is reflected the glorious Mt. Macchapucchare.
Day 2: Trek From Nayapul to Tikhedhunga (1577m)! (O/N)
Another short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul – the starting point at which roads disappear and trails appear. From hereon, your actual trekking begins, with the first hike taking you to Tikhedhunga (1577m). There you will lodge for the night at generally a Tea House (a mountain lodge for accommodation and meals).
Day 3: Trek From Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2850m)! (O/N)
The next day you will take another climb to Ghorepani, which resides at the height of 2850m. This area has a dense forest, the highlight of which is the red blossom of rhododendron flowers in the spring season. You will spend the night here at one of the mountain lodges.
Day 4: Trek From Ghorepani To Poon Hill & Then To Tadapani (2610m)! (O/N)
The following morning, you will rise up earlier than the sun, and hike up to Poon Hill public park area, which is less than 1-hour climb. This spot is famous for the scenic view of the Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri mountains. Watch as the first few rays of the rising sun illuminates the summit of these grand Himalayas, with the sky above exquisitely colored with shades of yellow, orange and red.
After devouring the majestic mountain landscapes, trekkers will then descent back to their lodge at Ghorepani for breakfast.
Trek From Ghorepani To Tadapani (O/N)
Then, in a few hours, you will start fresh for another climb to Deurali Pass, a descent down a ravine and then another ascent up the other side of ridge, which brings you to Tadapani.
Day 5: Trek To Ghandruk (1940m), the beautiful Gurung Village! (O/N)
One final descent and then you reach the beautiful Ghandruk village maintained by the friendly and cheerful Gurung people. Spend the night here, enjoying the traditional Gurung dance and cultures perked up by the delicious dishes at a nice brick-and-mortar lodge. In addition, the village also delivers exquisite vistas of Machhapuchhare and Annapurna mountain range.
Day 6: Back To Pokhara Through Nayapul! (O/N)
The trek comes to an end at Ghandruk, our last destination of the Poon Hill Ghandruk trail. Now, we return back to the lakeside lodge at Pokhara, and spend the day there.
Day 7: Back To Kathmandu From Pokhara! (O/N)
From Pokhara, we backpedal to the city of Kathmandu, from where you will be able to catch your international flight. Namaste!
