Opened as the Gurung Heritage Trail, this Ghalegaun trekking expedition is an adventurous journey to the Gurung hamlets of the Lamjung district. The trail leads you through forested path and paddy fields to the exotic Pempro waterfall, the Batase cave, Utter Kanya Temple and also to the bird-watching site of Talangyo lake.
Sitting in the lap of the Lamjung Himal, Ghalegaun is a model village of the western Nepal, popular for delivering panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains and for hosting the exotic Gurung settlement full of hospitality and cultural wonders. This tiny paradise of unspoiled ethnic beauty let’s you lodge in one of the local Gurung families, giving you a firsthand experience of their lifestyle.
There are also the legendary honey hunters in this region who can display their skills by collecting wild honey from cliffs as high as 300 meters with their bodies suspended from the top on nothing but a tangle of hemp ropes.
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (O/N)
Board an international flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, our guide will pick you up at the airport, and then show you to your hotel room. The rest of the day is reserved for your rest.
Day 2: A Tour Of Kathmandu (The City of Temples) (O/N)
Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is famous for the Durbar Square site, Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath and such other monuments expressing the excellence of the Nepalese art and culture. There are so many places to visit in Kathmandu alone that one day is not quite enough. All the same, our guide will have you tour through the best part of Kathmandu in a single day.
Day 3: Drive To Pokhara From Kathmandu (O/N)
From Kathmandu, your guide will take you to Pokhara, which is just about 6-7 hours drive (or you can take a 25 minutes flight there). If time allows, you may be able to roam through the paradise like city of Pokhara.
You could dare yourself for paragliding from Sarangkot or just have a pleasant time boating on the pristine Phewa Tal, marveling at the pretty reflection of the Mt. Macchapucchare on its water surface.
Day 04: Drive to Thunsikot (O/N)
A light breakfast at Pokhara and we will then head towards Thunsikot, catching first a local bus from Pokhara to Bijayapur Khola, then a hour long walk through paddy fields, crossing a river, and climbing up to Kalikasthan. Upon hitting Kalikasthan, we then take a ride to Thunsikot, where we spend the night in tents or a local’s home.
Day 05: Trek to Pas Gaon (O/N)
The next day we rise up with the sun, have breakfast, and then begin the real trekking. Our first destination is the Pas Gaon, another Lamjung district’s village that offers travellers a comfy homestay, mouthwatering dishes, cultures and architectural richness.
Day 06: Trek to Bhujung (O/N)
Our second trek takes us through a forested path, making us climb to Khumeru Danda. Located at an altitude of about 2200m, this Khumeru hill is an excellent viewpoint for reflecting on the beauty of the Bujhung village and the cold mountains (notably Mt. Manaslu, Himal Chuli, Buddha Himal among others).
From there, we then climb down to the Midim Khola, where a small hydropower project powers up the neighboring settlements. Finally, after about 30 minutes walk, our weary feet will step on the soil of the culturally rich Bhujung village for a homestay.
Day 07: Trek to Ghale Gaon/ Overnight at Ghanapokhara
This is the day we trek to our actual destination, the Ghale Gaon. We will explore this beautiful Gurung settlement, enjoy their hospitality, witness their cultural rituals and traditional programs (Dohori, Jyakure, Ghatu, Serka) and walk up to the famous viewpoint, which promises our digital cameras picture-perfect scenes of the Himalayas to capture.
If luck prevails, then you might even witness the brave honey hunters looting the honeybees hiding under the cliffs. We trek a bit further and end up at another Gurung settlement, Ghanapokhara, by nightfall.
Day 08: Explore Ghanapokhara (O/N)
Open your eyes in the morning to see the beautiful Ghanapokhara village in the broad daylight. Today our refreshed feet shall explore this Gurung hamlet, and our recharged cameras can shoot the grand Himalaya landscapes.
Day 09: Trek to Khudi (O/N)
Bidding a farewell to the Gurung hamlets, we then take a 5-6 hours long trek to the small Khudi valley residing by its namesake river (which too hosts a hydropower project). Major attraction here includes the Pempro waterfall and Batase cave.
Day 10: Drive back to Kathmandu (O/N)
Back to Pokhara, passing the exotic Begnas lake, and then boarding a transport to Kathmandu, where your international flight awaits you. Namaste!
